Apartment Living BlogApartment Living › 7 DIY Projects for Renters

Hello! I’m Kelly from Here Comes the Sun and we’ve come to the last post in the Rent Pretty Series. When you live in a rental, you face many challenges from storage to decorating to dealing with tiny spaces. Here are 7 DIY Projects that provide solutions for renters.

This coffee table made from a reclaimed window provides beautiful storage.
Laundry piling up? This laundry basket dresser controls the clothes clutter in a stylish way.
Need an easy window seat? Turn a shelf sideways and add a pillow on top.

Do you like the look of custom built-ins in a mudroom? Here is a simple

entryway organization piece made from a bookcase. All of the organization and none of the construction!

If you have limited space in your laundry room, try this DIY laundry room drying rack.

Apartments usually come with very small balconies and not a lot of privacy.  This privacy screen is easy to build and can attach and detach easily.

The lack of outdoor space in apartments can make gardening tough. Here is a unique vertical hanging herb garden that is made out of a shoe organizer.

I’ve enjoyed sharing this series with you. Thanks so much for reading and I hope that you’ve picked up a few ideas on how to turn your rental into a home.

Hello! I’m Kelly, creator of the blog Here Comes the Sun. My husband and I owned a home for seven years. Two and a half years ago, a job transfer took us out of state and now we rent. I’m currently in the process of making over our rental one temporary solution at a time. DIY is my passion and I love to share the projects that I do and the tips that I find.

About :

Hey, everybody! My name is Jason, and I contribute to this great blog, but when I'm not posting for ForRent.com, I like to play music with friends, cook, and travel as much as possible.

  1. These are some great projects, thanks for sharing! Particularly love the patio screen and the mudroom décor!

  2. Monica Lightfoot says:

I love the ideas! Tried to subscribe to your news feed but it wouldnt come up:(

  3. This is a great round up! Thanks so much!

  4. Great use of the things and awesome usage of the place.

  5. Useless post. I attempted to get the instructions for the hanging herb garden and the links didn’t work. Also noticed the privacy deck was from Engineer My Space which I subscribe to for great ideas with instructions. The “window seat” looked like an Ikea hack. If you are not going to post quality, original content why bother? If you are going to share the idea’s of another blogger great but give them the attribute and link back to their post.

    • So sorry to hear you did not find this blog post useful and that the link’s hosting site decided to remove the original post about the hanging herb gardens. We try our best to link back to the original poster’s content and unfortunately over time some links end up not working properly, this is an older blog post. Sometimes we have “round up posts” provided by bloggers that have a round up of clever and possibly useful ideas for renters that are popular at the time. We welcome any feedback you may have regarding posts that you would find to be more useful. Thank you!

  6. Hi! Quick question! We rent an apartment that has a porch…we have the best view from the porch but its overlooking a stream and wooded area and we are having a terrible time with mosquitos…is there any way to screen in the porch of this rented apartment?

  7. I love this there are not too may ideas out there fir people who rent properties and just want the place you live in nicer
Thank you for your great ideas keep up the good work

  8. Oh, that’s so cute! I love that the table’s made from an old window. I think the panels are gorgeous, but I’d probably have a plate of glass on top so it’s smooth. I can imagine myself pushing a glass and spilling it on accident.

  9. Those were elegant, practice ideas. Thank you muchly.
