Apartment Living BlogApartment Living › How to Save Money on Rent

Have you found the perfect apartment community, but can’t afford the rent? Never fear; there are ways you can save money on rent so that you can live in the apartment of your dreams without breaking the bank.

  1. Negotiate. Never underestimate the power of a deal. Before you sign your lease, ask for a reduction in monthly rent or if they will offer you 1-2 months’ rent free. This is often offered to residents who sign a longer lease commitment. If this is not possible, see if you can get utilities covered as part of your rent.
  2. Live with a roommate.  In a previous example, ForRent.com mentioned living with a roommate can save you money. To help you find the ideal someone to live with help split the cost of rent, check out the article “Don’t overspend on Rent” and this infographic, “How to Choose the Right Roommate”.
  3. Participate in Your Community. Apartment communities will sometimes host events or contests to help you save money. These events (such as balcony decorating contests) could award winners discounted rent payments. Many communities also offer money for recommending a family/friend to come live there (provided they sign the lease). So if you love your community, share with your network!
  4. Furnish & Decorate Wisely. Save money on furniture when moving into a new place by using great tips such as investigating thrift stores, provided in ForRent.com’s “How to Furnish Your Home on a Budget Infographic”.
