Apartment Living BlogApartment Living › How to use a Small Closet

Whether you live in an apartment or a home, small closets are always going to be an issue.  Figuring out how to make a small closet work more effectively will help you greatly in organizing your space.  Most of the time the closet comes with one wire shelf already installed.  We all naturally just hang coats and put shoes or boxes on the floor.

The best way to make a small closet work better is by looking at all of the space, from floor to ceiling.  Once you hang up your coats there is always a big amount of space open down to the floor.  This a great place to incorporate something tall.  You can choose anything that could add extra storage for you.  For instance, if you have lots of books you could put in a bookshelf to make a library.

In this closet I have used a table that has drop leaf sides.  This piece will also pull double duty.  When an extra piece of furniture is needed to serve food on for a party you can pull it out of the closet and just pop up the sides.

The basket can store winter gear and umbrellas.  Things you need to grab on your way out the door.  The table top can hold mail and keys.

Don’t forget that there are many things you can use hangers for other than coats.  Scarves and purses are items that can be hung.  This keeps your purse in a safe place and keeps wrinkles out of your scarves.

So remember to go tall and use as much vertical space as possible.  A suitcase is a great example of an item that stores well on the top shelf of a closet.  You want to store things here that you aren’t using everyday, items that usually take up lots of valuable floor space.

Now you have an organized closet with multiple uses.
