Jack-O-Lanterns Everywhere!!!

So everyone wonders… what to do for Halloween? How can I make my apartment stand out!! Here’s an idea.  Carve some pumpkins!!  Jack-o-lanterns, in my opinion, are one of the most traditional pastimes of Halloween.  It’s also a great way for parents and children to spend time together. One of my earliest memories from childhood is carving a pumpkin.

My first pumpkin carving was with my youngest sister’s god-mother. Being that I was little, I can’t remember exactly how to carve a pumpkin. Luckily, there are many online sites that helped jog my memory. Here are step by step instructions:

  1. Choose Your Size: Normally you want to choose a large pumpkin as this provides for easier cutting.  However, with an apartment living area, you may want to go with something a tad bit smaller.
  2. Choose Your Design: There are many stencils you can get that will provide the perfect design for your Halloween pumpkin. Whether you’re looking for a frightful face, or simply a really ornate one, you’ll find them online. You’ll be amazed what you can find with a little surfing. And be creative!
  3. Start Cutting: When you’re cutting into the top of the pumpkin, you want to make sure you cut out at an angle because if not, the cover will fall through. If you’re not confident in your ability to carve a pumpkin with a regular knife, try purchasing a carving kit found at local retailers for under $15.

As you can see, there are some really creative pumpkins out there. Here’s one a member of the ForRent.com team carved just last week:

  1.  Lastly, don’t forget to have fun!! Also be sure and proudly display your creation for all to see!

Another interesting thing to note:  do you consider yourself a novice with carving? If so, I suggest getting the mini pumpkins to carve simpler designs or expressions and place them around the living area.  They prove to be great accent pieces when throwing Halloween get-togethers.  Happy Carving!!!
