Apartment Living BlogApartment Hunting › Location, Location, Location

For some people, where an apartment is located can make all the difference.  Local amenities, proximity to schools, restaurants — even highways, can be deciding factors when choosing where to live.  That’s why resources like Walk Score® are growing in popularity. It’s all about lifestyle.  Being able to walk to local hotspots can be the deciding factor when choosing where to live.  Some might enjoy the seclusion that certain rural communities offer, while others prefer more urban environments that offer multiple amenities, like coffee houses and transit stops, within walking distance.  By reviewing a community’s Walk Score, potential residents can gauge the area’s walkability, providing helpful information during the selection process.

Another useful resource is the mobile application Layar, which allows people on the go to utilize their smartphone to identify local attractions.  The Layar app employs augmented reality, letting users view their current location through the camera of their phone.   For apartment seekers, this means finding all the available apartment listings within a 10-mile radius on the ForRent.com mobile website, by simply pointing and clicking their camera phone!

The growing popularity of websites and apps like the above make the apartment shopping process easier and easier, meaning potential renters who contact your community are more prepared to sign a lease.   Ultimately, it’s about giving the prospect the information necessary to make an informed decision.  Once an apartment shopper identifies the features that are most important to them in their next rental , resources like  Walk Score and Layar can help ensure you receive qualified LEADSTM.

  1. I am writing in regards to a score given to a property on the Walk Score.
The property is Pinhook Flats at Aksarben Village in Omaha, Nebraska.
They have a 68 and it is part of an urban village development with a grocery, gas station, restaurants, hotels and shops, all within 1 mile or less. What is considered walkable?
    Thank you

  2. Hi Barb! Here is a link to a PDF of Walk Score’s Methodology. This will tell you how they rate, and what they consider “walkable.”
Thanks and have a great day!
