Advertised as Smoke-Free While Smoking Issues Remain Unresolved
first spoke with a staff member who confidently presented the building to me, as a prospective tenant, as “smoke-free,” without mentioning any current smoking issues in the building. I later spoke directly with management and raised concerns that I had heard there may already be at least one smoker in the building. Management’s response was that, if smoking is occurring, they are making ongoing attempts to resolve it, and therefore still adamantly consider the building smoke-free. However, they... could not provide any timeline for when the issue would actually be resolved.
What I found particularly concerning was not simply the possibility that a resident may violate the rules, since no building can guarantee that will never happen. Rather, it was the apparent existence of a longstanding smoking issue in the building that, despite management’s stated ongoing attempts to resolve it, apparently remains unresolved while the building continues to be presented to prospective tenants as “smoke-free.”
The overall message I received was essentially: “We are making ongoing attempts to resolve it, therefore it effectively does not exist.”
