Is there a town near Lansing that has a real community feel to it?

Howell is a small town that is located to the east of Lansing. It has three festivals that provide a sense of hometown pride for the residents that live there. The first is the Howell Fantasy of Lights Parade. This festival is always held on the Friday after Thanksgiving, and it takes place in the evening to show off the lights in all their glory. Watch the glimmering floats coast by and enjoy the marching bands to ring in the holiday season. Houses and apartments in Howell empty out as people fill the street to watch this fun parade.

In August, the Howell Melon Festival takes center stage with a parade of its own. There are arts and crafts exhibits, music, dancing and entertainment–as well as the delicious melons that give the event its name. The Michigan Challenge Balloon Festival is actually a state championship which features more than 50 colorfully decorated hot air balloons. This event has something for everyone; there are dog shows, car shows, family entertainment and skydiving jumps. Fireworks and a "balloon glow" are other highlights of this festival.
