Located 15 miles east of South Bend, Elkhart is a city that might appeal to a Midwesterner or Midwest transplant looking for slower pace than what a larger city would offer. In the 1800s the city was a bustling junction of major railways that paved the way for industries to relocate there for the combined water power of the St. Joseph and Elkhart rivers.
Despite its fairly small town status, today Elkhart is one of the two most populated cities in South Bend and remains a diversified manufacturing center. It is known as the “Band Instrument Capital of the World,” with manufacturers there producing more than 50% of the nation’s band instruments. It has also been dubbed the “RV Capital of the World” due to the abundance of RV, manufactured housing and mobile home companies whose operations are located there.
Elkhart apartments cost less than those in the nearby cities of Granger, Mishawaka and South Bend. You may expect to pay around $550 for one-bedroom Elkhart rentals, and less than $700 for a three-bedroom unit.
