The military is the main employer and primary economic base of Newport News, an independent city in metropolitan Hampton Roads. Most of the people who live in Newport News work for Northrop Grumman Newport News Shipbuilding, at the U.S. Army base, Fort Eustis, or for other military-related employers in the area.
Downtown Newport News’ main landmark is the Victory arch. Built to commemorate the Great War, the arch is a major symbol on the downtown waterfront. Other notable attractions are The Mariner’s Museum, the Virginia Living Museum, and the Virginia War Museum. And while the military connection and the city’s shoreline location remain a main part of Newport News’ identity, an expansion and revitalization effort started in 2003 resulted in a development of the midtown business district. That area now includes not just commercial properties, but an urban residential community as well.
Outside the downtown area there are many distinct communities, each with its own personality and appeal. Those looking for a Newport News apartment will enjoy exploring the neighborhoods as they search for a new place to call home.
