Bargain Shopping: Yard Sales

Bargain Shopping: Yard Sales

The arrival of summer evokes a lot of things – from hot summer days to holiday sales. But it’s also great time to browse and bargain shop at yard sales. Sellers have the opportunity to offload items they no longer want or need, and buyers can take advantage of the great deals available. If are considering having a yard sale that, keep these things in mind.
  • Bigger is better. Considering organizing an apartment community yard sale through your property manager. Larger yard sales will attract more people than a smaller one – people want to see lots of items for sale.
  • Promote. Let people know about your yard sale.  Try posting an ad in the classifieds announcing it, and post signs throughout the neighborhood. Be sure to use a marker and write neatly in large print to improve visibility. Remember to check local ordinances to see if a yard sale permit is required and to comply with the applicable sign ordinance.
  • Label. Post your asking price on the item easily by purchasing removable round color sticky labels. Remember the most important thing is to get rid of the items no longer needed. Be open to negotiation with shoppers and consider taking less than your asking price.
  • Have a Plan B. What if it rains? Do you have a way to cover your items? These things should be well thought out in advance. If moving the yard sale indoors and putting up a tent are not viable options, be sure to include a rain date on any materials promoting the event.
Not interested in hosting or organizing a yard sale? Keep the following tips in mind as you peruse local neighborhoods:
  • Start Early. The early bird really does catch the worm. The best deals go quickly, so start bargain hunting in the early morning.
  • Negotiate. If you see something you want, but the price isn’t right, make the seller a reasonable offer. This works particularly well near the end of the day when sellers are trying to sell as much of the remaining items as possible.
