After a long day working, you probably want to curl up in bed and relax. But just how do you create a soothing and welcoming environment where you can instantly fall asleep?
For tips on maximizing your apartment bedroom for sleep and relaxation, we consulted Heather Hess, lead designer of interior design platform Swatchpop!, who gave us the lowdown on creating a relaxing atmosphere in your bedroom.

Cut the Clutter
First things first: get rid of items in your home that you don’t need.
“Keep it organized, and make sure you have a place for everything. When clutter builds up in an apartment, it can cause stress and anxiety. Try reducing the amount of stuff you add into your home,” says Hess. “I have always lived by the rule that if you bring something new into your home, take something old out.”
If you’re short on closet space, try utilizing space underneath your bed for additional storage space.
“If you have room under your bed or extra room in your closet, used closed containers to store items out of sight. When the bedroom is less cluttered, it will look and feel more calm,” says Hess.
Purchase Comfortable Sheets
Want a good night sleep? Try buying a nice sheet set. Hess says you shouldn’t underestimate the importance of comfortable bedding.
“Bedding is a huge aspect for getting a restful sleep. If the whole room is beautifully decorated but the amount of bedding is lacking and the comfort of the bedding is lacking then a peaceful night of sleep is out of the question. Take the time to find bedding and pillows that are comfortable for you,” says Hess.
Add Comfortable Seating
Hess suggests adding comfy seats to your bedroom to create a more inviting environment. Consider buying upholstered chairs, settees, and chaises. If you don’t have the space, place a bench at the end of the bed. You also can replace one of the nightstands with an accent chair or storage ottomans, if you’re short on space.
Consider Adding Layers to Your Bed
One of the least expensive ways to make your bedroom look more soothing.
“Decorate your bed with layers,” she says. “Use a variety of patterns and colors in the different layers of bedding to create a unique look. Don’t forget to add throw pillows and a fun throw blanket to the top to finish it off.”

Create an Environment That You Love
Above all, make sure everything in your bedroom brings you joy.
“A bedroom should be a place that you want to unwind in and a place you can separate yourself from the stresses of the day. A big way to achieve this is by filling it with things you love. Decorate with items that speak to you,” says Hess.
