Lighting Options for Renters

Lighting Options for Renters

As an interior designer and a renter, I am always on the lookout for non-permanent ways to make my space my own.  I like to call my design philosophy reversible decorating.  And one of the easiest ways I have found to implement reversible decorating is the use of lighting. 11-14 There are so many different options for renters when it comes to lighting.  A custom look is very easy to achieve.  And best of all, it’s very easy to change back when your contract is up!

Pretty much any light fixture can be switched out by someone who knows how to wire.  (Please don’t attempt to change wired lighting unless you have experience with such things…or enlist someone who does).  Just hold on to the original fixture and put it back up when you are ready to move. But today I wanted to share a couple of other options that can accomplish the same look without the need to hardwire anything.

Wendy Hyde - Sconce

Try adding sconces.  Sconces can be relatively inexpensive and can go a long way toward making a space not only more custom, but more usable as well.  The sconce in this photo adds great reading light and also adds to the illusion that this space is a built-in.

Try adding pendant lights.  Plug-in pendant lights can be a little tricky to find, but they’re definitely worth the search.  You can add one over a reading chair or in the corner of a room.  All they require is a hook in the ceiling to hang them…and that’s easy to patch when it’s time to go. Making your space feel like home is important.  So remember this bright idea and customize your lighting!
