Things You Should Actually Have in Your Linen Closet

Things You Should Actually Have in Your Linen Closet

Stocking your first place on your own can be overwhelming. If you are coming straight from school or your parents’ house, you likely do not have many things of your own. You will need a bed to sleep in, a chair to sit on, pots to cook with. The amount of “things” you need to live on your own can be a little staggering. Things You Should Actually Have in Your Linen Closet That is why it is important to determine what it is you really need, not just what you think you are supposed to have. Most American adults own way more than they actually need, and end up drowning in stuff. One of the best parts of moving out on your own is that you get a fresh start. Use that fresh start to choose what things you really need in your home, and what purchases can be put off for the future. Towels, bedsheets, and blankets are not the most exciting things you will buy for your new apartment, but they are necessities. There is no need to go overboard when buying linens, however. Let me help you see that you can get by with a bare minimum in your linen closet.

Bedroom

The rule thumb for sheets is that you should have one clean set to put on your bed when the other is in the wash. In other words, you need two sets of sheets for each bed in your rental. A full set of sheets consists of a fitted sheet, a flat sheet, and pillowcases. A set of sheets can usually get 1-2 weeks worth of use before needing to be laundered, so that gives you time to wash one set while you use the other. Things You Should Actually Have in Your Linen Closet Blankets, duvets, and quilts can go far longer without needing to be washed. Experts suggest that you can get away with washing these just twice a year, which means you don’t need to worry about having a spare set.

Bathroom

The same principle that you rely on for bed sheets, you can use for towels. Each person in your home should have two full sets of towels. A full set of towels includes a bath towel, a hand towel, and a washcloth. Save yourself a bit of time and money and use your towels two or three times before washing. Washing after every use is unnecessary. While one set is in the laundry, put your second set in the bathroom. Things You Should Actually Have in Your Linen Closet

For Guests

If you plan on having guests stay in your home, it is considerate to have a special set of linens just for guests. Instead of making them sleep on piled sheets or use a faded towel, keep a set in your linen closet that is dedicated to guest-only use. What to Buy

When it comes to linens, it is always best to buy new. While you can save a bit of money buying bedding second-hand, you run the risk of purchasing linens that are soiled, in bad shape, or, worst of all, contain bed bugs. Since you are saving money by only purchasing what you need, you can spend a little more money to buy your linens new from the store. Your fresh start in your new place allows you to make smart decisions about what you will buy to fill your home. When you purchase only what you need, you leave yourself room to fill your home with memories! Of course, first time renters like yourself are bound to need more than bedsheets.
