DIY Dollar Store Wall Art

DIY Dollar Store Wall Art

Decorating can be so much fun, but it can also be so very expensive! Sometimes we’re on a budget, a tight budget. Sometimes even if we have a big budget, we like to make it stretch. Right? Well, here is some exciting news, there are opportunities for you to spend less and get a BIG bang for your buck. And when I say ‘buck’, I literally mean a dollar.

Ever stroll through the dollar store and see something that is exceptionally ordinary and think to yourself, “that could be something extraordinary!” (Sometimes I even say it out loud. Hee-Hee). However, that aha moment comes to you, a light bulb comes on and you’re suddenly excited to head home and get your DIY on. Let’s do just that with these Dollar Store Wall Art ideas. I have two ways to make ordinary trays into colorful works of art!

Supplies for Dollar Store Wall Art:

Metal Trays ($1.00 each) Spray Paint Chalkboard Clear Coating Brush Small Clothespin Glue

I made one tray into a chalkboard and one into a clipboard using a mini clothespin. Let’s see how these came together!

Step One:

Spray paint your tray(s) in colors of your choice. I used a couple of colors I already had on hand in my garage, and I just happened to love these colors: Coral Isle and Sea Glass. Aren’t they lovely? I applied two to three coats to each side of the tray to ensure thorough coverage. Allow to dry completely.

Step Two:

First, we’ll finish the chalkboard. There is this fabulous product called clear Chalkboard Coating. It allows you to turn a surface into a chalkboard. So, I decided to do this with my oval tray. Follow the directions on the bottle and allow it to dry and cure.

Once it’s thoroughly dry, season the board with chalk. To season, place a piece of chalk on it’s side and rub it both horizontally and vertically, until the surface is covered. Wipe with a soft rag or cloth and you’re done!

For my second tray, I decided to turn it into a clipboard. Attach a small clothespin with a little glue.

Step Four:

For hanging, attach an adhesive plate hanger or 3M picture hanging strips (or hardware of choice). The trays are incredibly light, so no worries on having to stress over weight.

Step Five:

Add artwork — whether it’s a printable, a picture or a handwritten note! Don’t forget to keep that chalk handy too. Oh, the possibilities!
