Today from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m.,  Rockefeller Center in New York City will be holding its annual ceremony for the lighting of its Christmas tree. Every year the tree is strung with 30,000 environmentally friendly LED lights, more than 5 miles of electrical cord, and topped with a Swarovski crystal star.

he tradition originally started in 1931 when the first tree was put up by some workmen on the muddy construction site of Rockefeller Center, but the first formal lighting ceremony took place in 1933.

Since then, there have been a few important/special dates involving the Christmas tree which include:

1942: The Rockefeller Center actually had three trees this year instead of one. Each tree was a different color (red, white and blue) to show support for our troops who were involved in World War II.

1966: The first tree from outside the United States was erected. It was given by Canada, in honor of the Centennial of its Confederation. This is the farthest distance a tree has traveled to Rockefeller Center.

1999: The largest tree was erected this year at 100 ft tall. It was a 100 year old, 10 ton, Norway spruce from Killingworth, CT.

2004: This was the year that the Swarovski star was created and added. It is 9 ½ feet in diameter and 1 ½ feet deep. The star has 25,000 crystals on it and 1 million facets. That is no ordinary star, that’s for sure.
