In recent years, brunch has become a popular weekend meal. What’s not to love about brunch? To start, we get to sleep in. Then, of course, breakfast fare is some of the best there is. And if that’s not enough, having a mimosa, Bloody Mary, or other cocktail is almost a brunch requirement.

Today, I’m sharing a few tips for hosting brunch in your apartment. With very little effort, you can recreate all the reasons we’ve come to love brunch, right in your own place. Plus, you can even stay in your pj’s and catch up on your favorite shows for the ultimate weekend treat.

Serve savory, sweet, and fruit

When you’re planning a brunch menu, keep it simple. Pick a savory dish, add something sweet, and serve fruit. (Coffee, tea, and a cocktail are recommended, too.) It doesn’t need to be complicated to be hit with guests.

For the savory, I recommend a quiche or egg casserole. If you’re serving 4 or more people, dishes like these make it super simple for you. They can be prepared in advance and set out so folks can help themselves. One of my favorites is Spinach, Bacon, Swiss Quiche. You can find the recipe here on my blog.

Next, add something sweet for those who like to indulge in the morning. Donuts, muffins, or pastries would be perfect.

Finally, chop up a big bowl of fruit and berries. I promise that following the “savory, sweet, and fruit” guideline will give you more than enough food, and the variety is sure to please everyone.
Don’t make everything.

Don’t make everything

Unless you love spending time in the kitchen, there’s no need to make everything. I recommend hitting up a local bakery for the sweet goodies. Its offerings are likely to be just as good as homemade, and they will save you a ton of time.

Use seasonal ingredients

When you’re thinking about your menu, try incorporating ingredients that are in season. Since you’re not serving an endless array of foods, it’s important to choose things that have fabulous flavor. Seasonal items are likely to be at their prime-and priced well.

If possible, visit your local farmers market. My guess is that you could get almost everything you need at the market, including fresh eggs, pastries, and flowers. You’d be surprised at all the homegrown and homemade goodies you can find.

Sip mimosas

For cocktails, I recommend mimosas. Why? Because they are easy and customizable, and most people enjoy them.

In case you’re not familiar with a mimosa, it’s typically 3 parts champagne to 1 part orange juice. By changing up the juice, you can create dozens of variations on this classic cocktail. I recommend sticking to 2 or 3 juices for the sake of simplicity. Since it’s fall, I opted for apple cider and classic OJ.

As a final note, I always recommend having something nonalcoholic on hand for those who don’t imbibe.

Keep it casual

Finally, keep your gathering casual. If you’re hosting in your apartment, turn on a fun classic movie such as “Breakfast Club,” “Breakfast at Tiffany’s,” or something meaningful to you and your guests. Instead of setting a formal table, arrange the food on a buffet and let your guests sit where they are comfortable.

Be sure to have a few open surfaces for guests to rest their plates and drinks. Encourage your guests to also help themselves. This allows you to enjoy the brunch yourself.
