Preparing for Job Interviews

Preparing for Job Interviews

Preparing for an interview takes a lot more than just Googling “common interview questions”. You need to come to the interview prepared and ready to show the interviewers why you’re the BEST fit for the position. To help get you started, here are some tips that will help land the job! Do your research: First of all, not only do you need to do your research about the position, but you need to research the company and what exactly they do. Be prepared for the interviewers to ask you “Why do you want to work here?”. It will look good if you can tell them what you like about the company, why you would like to work their, and what you can offer them. Visit the company’s website and review their background and mission statement. Having a full understanding of the company is key as an interviewee. That’s why “first impressions count” is a true statement.   [tweetthis twitter_handles=”@ForRentU”]Show your interviewer why you’re the BEST fit for the position using these tips! #job #interview[/tweetthis] Anticipate interview questions: It would be great if we all knew what the interviewer is going to ask, but that’s not the case. After you complete your research, prepare candid responses based on your new knowledge about the company. To help prepare the responses, think of questions that the interviewer might ask based on what their company does. Some questions may include:
  1. What do you know about the company? And what about our work interests you?
  2. How do you think this position will assist our company and the work we do?
  3. What are your weaknesses? (it’s a basic question, but it is still asked every once in a while because no one is going to list their weaknesses on their resume.)
I don’t recommend memorizing the response word-for-word because it may come off robotic. You want every response to sound organic and as if you thought of your answer in the moment. Think of canned responses as more of a foundation to work off of when you are thinking of your exact answer in the moment of the question asked. Essentially, put yourself in the interviewers shoes and think about what they want to know about you and how you will fit the role. Dress to impress: ALWAYS make sure you look your best for your interview! As for your perfect outfit, the black suit and white shirt doesn’t have to be your go-to outfit. It’s okay to play with color, but don’t get too crazy. Just make sure your overall appearance is clean and wrinkle-free. Another factor to rocking your interview outfit, is how it makes your feel. Feeling good about yourself is just what you need to boost your confidence which will show in your interview. What to bring: Do not come empty handed! This is a BIG no-no. Make sure to bring a few extra copies of your resume. You never know who you will be meeting with and who will ask for a copy. Also, make sure to bring a notepad and pen. You will want to make note of important things you discuss with your interviewer. Next, if applicable, bring a portfolio of your work. Interviewers always do their research on the interviewee beforehand, however sometimes they will forget a thing or two. Providing a hard copy of your previous work is a great opportunity to remind the interviewer your accomplishments. Follow up: Just before the interview comes to a close, interviewers will most likely ask you if you have any additional questions. This is something that you need to prep for ahead of time, so make sure you have all of your questions written down. Having nothing to say, might make you seem not so interested in the position. So here are some questions to help start your list:
  1. What is the word environment like?
  2. What are the growth opportunities like?
  3. What are the next steps in the hiring process?
In general, this part of the interview will give you a chance to ask anything you’d like to know that wasn’t already covered earlier. However, make sure to not ask something that is already on the company’s website or was already answered in some form earlier in the conversation. This will show that you didn’t take the time to review their website or weren’t fully paying attention. After the interview is finished, be prepared to follow up. Best and non-invasive way is just simply sending a thank you email within 24 hours after the interview. This will show them how interested you really are!
