Within roughly 15 minutes of entering the apartment for the first time, before moving any belongings in, I discovered a severe cockroach infestation. I found more than 40 live cockroaches and documented what I saw. I immediately contacted management and was required to leave for several hours while they let off bug bombs. I was told I might see some roaches for a few days afterward. Unfortunately, the problem did not go away. That first night, I found approximately 20 more live roaches. In the… following days, I documented adults, babies, and multiple egg casings/egg sacs. At one point, I found 25 live roaches in a single day. My sister and her 9-month-old baby were originally planning to move in with me. Management never informed us of any existing cockroach infestation before we signed the lease, received the keys, and began moving in. Had I known the condition of the apartment, I would not have moved in, especially knowing a baby was expected to live there. The infestation was discovered before I brought my belongings into the unit, making it difficult to believe it was caused by anything I brought in. I was told the unit had been inspected and cleaned before move-in, but that does not appear to be the case. My kitchen drawers are covered in cockroach droppings, and I have found multiple egg casings on the floors. I was also told pest control comes monthly and that surrounding units had not reported cockroaches. I paid a significant amount of money expecting a clean, habitable home. Instead, my move was delayed and I have spent most of my tenancy documenting and dealing with cockroaches. Even after management’s treatment, I continue finding dozens of live roaches.
