SAVE YOUR MONEY, DON’T RENT HERE
Living at Towne Oaks has been one of the most frustrating experiences of my life. In just the last two months, my family and I have been displaced twice once while my wife was 9 months pregnant and again just days after our newborn came home from the hospital.
The first incident was a fire caused by the property’s own maintenance crew. Nothing burned, but soot spread throughout our entire apartment. The leasing office did not assist in cleaning at all. No cleanup crew was ever sent, official or... otherwise. My 9 month pregnant wife and her sisters had to wipe down the entire apartment themselves while I was at work. Despite our apartment being unlivable, we were given no real support and ended up homeless for a week.
Management gave us keys to another unit to stay in temporarily, but when I asked if we could just transfer there permanently, they said no because we weren’t 70% into our lease and hadn’t paid the $500 transfer fee. So we stayed in the loaner unit for a week until the A/C was fixed, and still no help with the soot left behind from the fire.
When the A/C broke again, this time we had a 1–2 day old newborn and my wife was freshly postpartum. Management offered for us to stay in the empty unit again, but living out of a vacant apartment with a newborn is not a solution. I had to pay out of pocket for my own A/C just to keep the apartment livable. The leasing office’s so-called solution was to provide a portable unit that was literally held together with tape and far too small to cool our 690 sq ft unit.
Now, while the A/C has finally been repaired, we have received no real restitution. The only “compensation” offered for being displaced weeks at a time was a $25 utility discount. Insulting considering the hardship, the unsafe conditions, and the out-of-pocket expenses we incurred. This discount was also only offered after the first incident. Nothing even been mentioned for the second.
Between the fire caused by their staff, the repeated A/C failures, and management’s refusal to provide proper solutions or accountability, it’s clear this complex cannot provide a safe or habitable place to live. If you value your health, don’t rent here!
