Deplorable Policies During A Pandemic
If I could give zero stars I would. My family and I moved into State Street Village through McKinley Properties with the hopes of planting roots in Ann Arbor. With them offering a unique opportunity to move into a home that in this market didn’t require 3x the rent, we took it. The rent was steep, but we had enough adults in the house with income, we thought we'd be ok.
Mind you this was in the infancy of the pandemic. As is want to happen one of the adults in our home lost his job, robbing... us of $600 of much needed rent. So we flopped on our rent in January.
Color us surprised that this company files for eviction the same month you are missing rent. No negotiations, no second chances. So we proceeded to spend 15 months fighting the system applying for CERA, looking for additional income. On top of all of this, I have a disabled and sick sister who lives with us who, during the 2 years at this place, experienced 5 surgeries.
Due to a fluke in MSHDA and CERA we were evicted a second time around March of this year. But still we prevailed and received CERA funding until mid July 2022. And that one adult FINALLY got a job.
Great right? Excited went to renew our lease. It took a WEEK to get ahold of someone, plus several phone calls and emails. We got told that "they're not choosing to offer us a renewal." Excuse me what?
Apparently in their lease agreement they have the right to not offer renewal. But what about mitigating circumstances you ask? "When we decide to not offer renewal, our decision is final" a representative from corporate told me over the phone today.
"Our decision is final."
The McKinley company dominates the rental housing in Ann Arbor. Based upon what we were just told, McKinley has driven my family, my disabled sick sister, and my daughter from Ann Arbor.
Don't fall for their pleasantry. Don't fall for their application process. They will rob you with outrageous rental prices, and evict you without negotiation. They will utilize their right to non renewal and not offer second chances because 2020-2022 was hell for everyone.
I do NOT recommend this location or any of the McKinley apartments.
They are lovely homes. But terrible customer service.
