Who knew?
Moving into an apartment was a temporary, but necessary, stop-gap after a divorce. I reluctantly signed a leaser committing me to an apartment in Queens after twenty years of living in a home in the suburbs..That was 1991, almost 25 years ago and I'm still happily in the same apartment. Who knew?
I discovered the first of many advantages to apartment living shortly after moving in. I can only describe it as a sense of 'belonging', as in living in a community. Let me explain - In the... morning there would be other tenants on the elevator as I entered - a smile and "good morning". In the lobby I'd run into others who were picking up a to-go coffee from an urn supplied by management- a smile and "good morning" The doorman smiled, greeting me with "good morning" as I left the building.. By the time I reached the office I had been greeted with a smile and a cheery 'good morning" by at least six people, all of whom I didn't know. What a lovely way to begin the day! I hadn't before realized how isolating living in a private home could be. . . think about it, you get into your car, drive to the office and don't meet up with another person until you arrive. . I discovered there seems to be a commonality among people living in an apartment building. Not sure I understand it, but there is a comfort level that sharing the same space brings. . . a bit like family. People went out of their way to introduce themselves and welcome me to the building . It was like a breath of fresh air, and it was then I realized how lonely the suburbs can be. After living in my home for so many years the best a neighbor offered was a passing wave. Who knew? Getting my post-divorce head together was easier than I thought, thanks to ridding myself of many responsibilities. Didn't have to worry about shoveling snow from the driveway. Didn't have to call a plumber to fix the bathroom leak. Every necessity was promptly taken care of by our competent building staff. Who knew? Apartment living - 1 Private Home -0
I am secure with every aspect of where and how I live. I love, love my apartment, including its' rent-stabilized designation I love the location, with every imaginable convenience nearby.. I love that neighbors allow for socialization when I want it, and privacy when I need it. Who knew? Apartment living - 1 Private Home -0
