Chestnut Lake

I lived at Chestnut Lake Apartments for the duration of my lease, and unfortunately, my experience was extremely disappointing.

The biggest issue was the lack of maintenance and cleanliness. The roach problem was severe—not only were there roaches and silverfish throughout the hallways, but the roaches were also inside the apartment units. There was often a strong smell of dog urine throughout the building, trash would sit in the stairwells for weeks without being cleaned up, and the elevators... were almost always dirty. People also treated the lobby like a donation center, leaving random food, clothes, couches, chairs, and other junk sitting around for days. The hallway doors slammed constantly, day and night, making it difficult to get any peace and quiet. Ironically, it seemed like management only started putting more effort into cleaning and maintaining the property near the end of my lease.

Maintenance was by far the worst part of living here. I waited two months for someone to unclog my shower, leaving me with standing water every time I showered. The air conditioning barely worked—you could only feel a little cool air if you stood directly in front of the vent, while the rest of the apartment stayed hot. During the winter, the heater barely worked either, leaving the apartment freezing. The dishwasher constantly broke down and never cleaned dishes properly, and the patio blinds were so flimsy that they broke with the slightest movement. Even the hallway closet doors regularly came off their hinges and were left broken.

When I reported the roaches, management tried to blame me and claimed I must have brought them from my previous home. I had never dealt with roaches a day in my life before moving into Chestnut Lake, so that response was frustrating and dismissive. Any time I brought up the roach problem—or really any issue with my apartment—the response was always, “We’re under new management,” “We’re under new ownership,” or “We’re working on it.” There always seemed to be a new excuse instead of an actual solution.

The laundry rooms were another headache. The washers and dryers were frequently out of order, and it wasn’t uncommon for people to take your clothes out of the machines and throw them on the floor so they could use them.
