September is National Preparedness Month and the tropics have been quite active with hurricanes while earthquakes and other extreme weather and emergencies have devastated many regions. Everyone is strongly encouraged to develop preparedness plans and kits and determine what to pack, where to evacuate, who to call and many other decisions to ensure our safety and protection. For apartment managers, a plan is critical and cannot be overstated enough.

 

For Brittney Bridges, Property Manager at The Village at Western Branch, heeding these warnings and being proactive with mobile communication tools was a true life-saver for her community and its residents. In 2016, Hurricane Matthew came through the Hampton Roads region on the Virginia coast and significantly impacted many homes and businesses including Bridges’ apartment community in Portsmouth.

 

 

Because The Village at Western Branch recently signed up for the texting app, Community Messenger, they had 24/7 access to their residents during and after the hurricane. Bridges said, “If they needed anything, they could message us. If we needed to contact them we could message them or get their numbers from the app.”
