Pirate Island Apartments

I have had so many experiences with properties bought out by management companies that don't care for the tenants, and the living experience goes down, as the rent goes up. Pirate Island is a family owned business that actually cares!

Well one, the area is beautiful and peaceful year round. I loved going on walks or just sitting on the balcony, which wad also spacious. It is just off the Beltline and on the bus line. Very convenient, with lots of stores around for your every day needs. So 5/5... for location!

Two, there are plenty of newly renovated units that are well-kept. I really liked my bathroom vanity and kitchen that opened up into the dining room and living room. Lots of natural light as well. Lobby and laundry room was also clean and checked regularly. Oh and the fact that there are actually always laundry machines available on the property!

Three, maintenance was always helpful and responded right away, often coming over to help within a few hours. In the winter when our heaters were not working, maintenance came over to check. He made sure we had space heaters right away while they were looking at the problem. Communication with the management has been great since day 1! Another 5/5 for management, which is rare in Madison these days.

No place is perfect, but Pirate Island was such a great find for my time in Madison and I am truly grateful that Christy got us set up on a tour and prepped a very smooth move-in process--apartment searches can be very stressfull!

Only reason I moved is for work and because I have a cat. If I ever return to Madison, I will definitely take another look. That being said, if you are looking at this place, I can say management is great and that really makes a difference!

I am a renter from kre management and recently had damage from a storm. I cannot express the level of gratitude to their team. The property manager Pat was so friendly, considerate of my remote work and was being very proactive along with the workers that came down and cut the fallen tree branch. The electric company k r a n t z that this management company uses is also very professional, quick and even worked in the rain to get my AC unit up and running. As a person that has had long years in... service sharing how amazing the team was and how appreciative I am is a renter is not very usual these days. I had to spend $50 rewashing laundry after my storage unit flooded, a number of expensive electronics and sentimental items were damaged… and I was never compensated for it. They didn’t even respond to my emails. Renter’s insurance doesn’t cover external water damage like that either! The washers and dryers are overpriced and barely work. Found that out the hard way.

They were dishonest about the flooding issues, and also misled me about the air conditioning, claiming it would cool the entire... apartment when it didn’t. The buildings smell strongly of ammonia and mold… it’s definitely not a good environment for anyone that needs clean indoor air.

KRE management is terrible. They scheduled apartment showings at extremely inconvenient times that didn’t work with my sleep schedule, which led me to spend $450 on last-minute hotel stays which I wasn’t compensated for. Communication is awful and getting a timely response (unless it affects them) is nearly impossible.

I would strongly recommend staying away from this place if you have a chronic illness… it’s not worth the stress or potential health issues. The walls are also very thin, so you can hear absolutely everything. This is not a good place for those who work first, second, or third shift especially if you need sleep… it’s really loud. They allow cigarette smoking and cats, so the hallways smell pretty bad. When they “fix” things, they do it as cheaply as possible.

Moved in one month ago and have had an overwhelmingly positive experience. Maintenance is very quick and thorough to respond to requests. The buildings are older but have been well maintained. The grounds are also regularly tended to. There’s even storage here for kayaks and paddle boards. Communication from management regarding parking updates, etc is strong. The island is surprisingly quiet for how close it is to main roads. I love the wildlife present here as well. I almost forget I’m in such... a convenient location it’s so peaceful. obsessed with living at pirate island tbh the location is unreal — water views, bike path right there, and still super close to everything in madison. my unit is actually cute (not giving outdated vibes like most places lol), and maintenance is fast which is rare. it feels really chill and safe here, like low-key community energy without being annoying. honestly one of the best places i’ve lived
