Excellence = Motivation x Commitment x Consistency
Excellence: Let’s be honest – where once a degree could get you noticed by the best companies in the nation, now it’s the ‘minimum’ requirement for just about any job. So, how do you get noticed? Excellence. Strive to exceed the parameters of ‘average’ in everything that you do and go above and beyond any expectations. Once you’ve mastered this behavior, bring it over to the job market and most importantly, keep LinkedIn informed of your successes and endeavors. This is NOT bragging – it’s an online resume available to any and all potential employers. Motivation: Keep it movin’! To get you started, make a plan. Try jotting down what you’d like to accomplish every year for the next five years. Don’t forget to include HOW you are going to accomplish these goals. As long as you have direction, motivation comes naturally! Adjust your plans as you go, and remember to start a new plan at the end of the first five years. Commitment: One of the most important aspects of landing the job of your dreams and entering the industry of your choice is making the right contacts. Networking has become essential to job placement and job advancement, so commit to attending events that will put you in the same room with the people whose work you admire. Make some great connections and you may just land your dream position. Consistency: Graduation does not mark the end of your learning experience. The tests, midterms and finals are over (for now – I see you, grad students!), but you will never stop learning, at least not if you want to truly succeed in your industry. Become familiar with the ins and outs of your field, increase your business knowledge and be sure to bring this insight to all your interviews! In the words of Elle Woods, “You must always have faith in people. And most importantly, you must always have faith in yourself!” You have what it takes, the working world awaits you.
