Party-Proofing Your Apartment

Party-Proofing Your Apartment

It’s no hidden secret that college students like to party. In fact, it may be a college student’s favorite thing to do. So, naturally, once one finds their very first off-campus apartment, throwing a welcome party (or many welcome parties) is at the top of the list. However, let’s take a second to consider that your new neighbors may not all be college students, and perhaps, parties may get a bit too loud for their liking. Good news. There are some steps you can take. It’s time to explore how to “party-proof” your college apartment! Group of young people having fun dancing at party Not only are neighbors a concern, but your stuff should be as well! As college students, it’s probably safe to assume you aren’t rolling in the dough, so party goers coming over and breaking your things is not an option. What do you do? ApartmentTherapy.com has some great ideas to get you started!
  • Move breakables away from danger zones – any antiques, valuables or irreplaceable items need to be put away immediately!
  • Worried about furniture? Check out a trick your grandmother has known about for years…slipcovers. Food and drink slide right off!
  • Stock up on napkins and cleaning products. Things will get spilled and they must be cleaned up. Be prepared!
Now about those neighbors we talked about… Their biggest complaint, without a doubt, will be noise. Who can blame them? If your new apartment has thin walls, there isn’t a lot you can do about it. However, there are some upgrades you can make that will help things out. Lifehacker.com and Homeguides by SFGate.com have some great ideas for you!
  • If possible, furnish the space with sound-absorbent overstuffed furniture.
  • Hanging tapestries or even rugs on the walls can also help.
  • Use weather-stripping foam tape around the top and sides of a door frame to create a better seal that will limit the noise coming through the door.

Hopefully, you feel a little better prepared for throwing an awesome party in your new off-campus apartment without making enemies out of your new neighbors. Keep your belongings safe, your neighbors happy and your property managers calm, and your first apartment experience will be a good one!
