How to Get Packages Delivered to Your Apartment – 8 Tips You Need to Know

The holidays are upon us, and along with the tinsel and bright lights everywhere comes the deluge of packages that are bound to wind up at your door. We’re sure you love all the gifts, but receiving packages when you’re an apartment renter can be a real pain. Besides the threat of theft, you probably don’t want an unattended package left at your door to wait out in the cold. But there are tips you can use to help make the process much smoother. Becky Blanton, who has worked seasonally in the shipping departments at major companies like UPS, USPS and Amazon.com for the past 20 years, shares with us her tried-and-true tips for getting packages delivered to your apartment. Package Delivery Front Door Ask Your Property Manager You’ll have to check first, but many property managers can hold packages for you in the apartment building’s main office, if one exists. This makes it easier for FedEx or UPS to deliver any packages to one secure location. Contact the FedEx Office Certain FedEx office spots will hold packages for you. You’ll want to contact your local office to work out the details. Find a local spot near you here. Go Directly to the Shipping Company “All major shippers will hold your package at their facility for you to pick up. Contact your local UPS or FedEx office for details,” says Blanton. “There is no charge for it, but you will have to drive there to pick them up.” Package Delivery UPS Consider Using Swapbox Swapbox is an online service that allows you to send and receive packages. The boxes are located in office buildings and other public places. Your first delivery is free and then $1.99 each after that, making this a cost-effective option. The only downside is this service is only available in certain cities. Use the location tracker to see if you can use Swapbox in your city. Require a Signature If you’ll be receiving something expensive (speakers, a new computer or TV), you’ll want to consider requiring a signature. That way if you’re not home at the time of delivery, the delivery service will leave a note for you. Afterwards, you can call and ask them to hold it so you can go get it at a later date or ship it you at a more convenient time. Purchase a Secure Lockbox If you’re the type that receives plenty of packages, you might want to consider purchasing a secure lockbox. You’ll want to buy one that locks using a padlock. Leave the padlock — unlocked on or inside the lockbox — and ask the delivery person to lock up the box after they’ve dropped off your package. If you can, secure the box to your door or some other exterior item. You’ll probably want to let your property manager know you plan on doing this so he or she knows to leave the box alone.

Have It Shipped to Your Office If you’re OK with your coworkers knowing what gifts you’re receiving, consider having the packages shipped to your office. Again, you’ll want to make sure this is OK with your boss before you do it. Sign Up for Delivery Text Alerts The fastest way to track your package in real time is by signing up for alerts. The shipping company will send you a text or email letting you know where your package is. That way, you may be able to dart home in time to get your package.
