Tough call - Good luck
I lived here 2019-2024. We lived in one apartment that was destroyed by the derecho and then had to move to another apartment. I was grateful we had another place to go, the process was a difficult one. Sheila didn't seem very understanding of the problematic financial situation that put me in. I had to pay another deposit for another apartment and transferring the deposit was not an option. She pushed us to move out of our old apartment before there was any electricity back in the city. We... moved in the summer heat, from third floor to third floor with no air, no lights, and nothing packed. She made me get a new garage, even though my old one was fine. She said that this was because the next person who moved in would want that garage. But, I saw maintenance and staff using it more than anything. The moveout process was a hassle. I am a good tenant. Clean. I was never late for a payment. The garage door remotes are very sensitive and I hit the remote on accident and the garage door came down on my car as I was backing out. Despite this being a huge safety issue, she was going to charge me to replace a garage door panel. What if a small child was there? That door would've come down on the child. But she blamed me for the damage. She was extremely hard to work with when she requested a "final walk through". I explained to her that I moved two hours away and couldn't come back during the day. She made a big deal about this, made it seem nearly impossible to do the "final walk through" on a weekend, even though they are always there on the weekends working on something. I asked for the owner's information so I could talk to them about my security deposit and the garage door panel and how I don't feel I should be charged for that. She refused to respond to my request. So, would I recommend people to move here, that is a very tough call. It is tucked away and a safe place to call home. But Sheila is very picky and bossy about what cleaning supplies to use and how to use them. Which is good because it shows that they care about their property. But the lack of friendliness, understanding and compassion is something to consider. I saw a few reviews where they said Sheila was rude, and I would agree with this. She always made me nervous and uncomfortable and made you feel like you were being watched. If thinking about renting here, proceed with caution. BUT... the neighbors are great. I miss them dearly. And the apartment was nice, updated, spacious and clean.

Westgate strives to deliver a wonderful experience. We have a great relationship with our residents and encourage them to contact us right away with any concerns so we can address them. Please consider the following statements to give a broader... understanding of the overall circumstances of this review.
In 2020, a derecho devastated the entire landscape of the Cedar Rapids area, including homes, businesses and even apartment properties. There was considerable damage to many properties, rendering them uninhabitable. Westgate complied with the City of Cedar Rapids to remove several residents from their residences due to safety concerns resulting from the damage incurred. For compliance and safety reasons, the luxury of waiting to move was not an option.
Westgate received hundreds of calls from displaced homeowners and renters throughout the Cedar Rapids area during this difficult time. However, Westgate prioritized finding a place for our residents first. Several residents were offered the choice to move to another unit within Westgate or to find housing elsewhere on their own. The circumstances were out of our control, but Westgate did its best to timely transition our residents who made the decision to stay.
Since the tenant’s lease changed, Westgate minimized the financial impact by requesting a security deposit for the tenant’s new residence AFTER Westgate returned the entire security deposit to the tenant from their old residence.
As for the move out process, the tenant knew in advance that final walk throughs are scheduled Monday through Friday. Going above and beyond, the actual walk through for this tenant occurred on a Sunday afternoon. Most other properties would never even consider meeting on a Sunday.
The garage door sensors work properly and the tenant was never charged for the garage door damage.
