Cardiff by the Sea, known as just Cardiff to locals, is a beach community off the shores of the Pacific Ocean just 25 miles north of San Diego. This charming beach town is known for its sandy beaches, ocean cliffs, and excellent surfing. Cardiff State Beach and San Elijo round out the city's beaches. San Elijo is famous for its campground while Cardiff State Beach is known as a surfer's paradise. When the tide is low, a grassy reef and tide pools are exposed. For those not interested in sand, head south of the beach to explore the San Elijo Lagoon, a wetland preserve popular for hiking and birdwatching. After a day in the sun, Cardiff's town center is the perfect spot to unwind. Everything from taco shops, health food, and delicious seafood joints are located along Newcastle Avenue. The rest of Cardiff by the Sea is made up of residential areas holding a variety of beachy rentals to choose from.
