Harbour Gates Apartments

Harbour Gates is a bad value and has an unscrupulous leasing agency and management company. On first visiting Harbour Gates I was taken to a "sample apartment" to look at layout while the target apartment was being renovated. Liked it well enough but at signing time all of a sudden I was signing for the sample apartment and not the other apartment. Thought nothing of it and that maybe it would be helpful to be able to move in earlier.

A few days after moving in I noticed a faded vandalism on… the wall that said "RIP" but still wasn't particularly worried, never seriously considering it had anything to do with a death. Then some months in I started to notice that mail from the previous tenant was still coming in large quantities, including Social Security checks. I thought the two might be connected and was horrified to find after a simple Google search that the previous tenant (as IDed from all the mail) had killed himself in the apartment. The "RIP" writing on the wall was also presumably his and the leasing office had done the bare minimum to cover up the vandalism and moved me in two months later.

I confronted the head leasing agent with these facts and they played dumb, not even recognizing the name of the previous tenant. I showed them the news article from the Washington Post online detailing the suicide and she went silent. I was horrified and wanted to leave 6 weeks ahead of my lease end time and even given the circumstances they held me rent responsible for 8 weeks!! I understand that by law a company does not have to disclose what happened in a housing unit before renting it to you but I would take Harbour Gates/Kay Management's actions here as forewarning. If one of your tenants is mentally ill enough to kill himself and vandalize the apartment and you slap a light coat of paint up and lease it out what does that say about how you value your tenants? And then after the next person foolish enough to lease with you gets wise you make him pay rent for 2 months after he hands his keys over while you probably are working on double-booking the place? The apartment charges a deposit and "rent" for pets. This money is non-refundable and DOES NOT cover any damage done by your pets. It is just a fee that covers nothing except your pets right to inhabit the property.

I wouldn't recommend Horrible Gates Apartment to my worst enemy if I had one. There apartments are poorly constructed. Old windows that are so bad. During the winter months you can feel the cold air blowing right threw the window. So expect to pay $200 to $300 for your BGE bill. Paper thin walls you can hear your neighbors every move and conversations. Walls are so thin I can even hear my next door neighbor taking a shower and taking in there bathroom. Not to mention I can even hear the… apartment under me them even talking in there apartment and even using the rest room. All of the appliances are from 1991 old and out dated. Plus the floors creak when you walk across your apartment. Maintenance people are rude and nasty they knock once and just burst into your apartment. The office staff are fake and 2 faced people they are extremely nice when you are signing your lease. But once you sign your lease they to forget that you even exist. When you have a problem or an issue they lie to you and say that they will call you and they dont. Then they will screw u at the end of lease. I do not recommend this place to anyone. There are alot better Apartments in and around Annapolis that are completely updated for $50 to $150 per month. It's worth the extra money if you want piece and quiet. Also Harbor Gates has fabricated all of there positive reviews. Do your research on apartments.com before you consider living at Harbor Gates.
