The Barton Apartments

Avoid at all costs. I lived at the Barton for over a year, and it was the worst apartment experience I’ve had. If you're looking for an upscale apartment in Clayton or a safer place in STL, look elsewhere.
The Barton looks good on paper—safe location, seemingly lower rent—but it’s poorly managed and miserable to live in.
• The building is filthy. Hallways and stairwells reek, carpets are stained and full of pet hair.
• Need a lightbulb replaced? Expect a $60 charge—even for fixtures you didn’t… install.
• Walls and floors are paper thin. You’ll hear everything your neighbors do.
• Water pressure is terrible, hot water runs out fast, and maintenance never fixes anything.
• Hidden fees abound. Trash, garage, and utilities add $200–$300/month.
• Units are dark and depressing. Gray paint, poor lighting, and no natural light in hallways.
• Amenities are subpar. Tiny pool, broken grills, and a cramped gym.
Worst of all is the management. They're unkind, unprofessional, and unhelpful. They gossip about residents, threaten legal action if you complain, and make life here unbearable.

I do not recommend this place. While the highway is close with easy access, the road noise is extremely loud. The A/C noise is also loud throughout the year. Especially on the higher floors, you will hear a humming sound all year long. The parking gate often malfunctions, and I have been unable to go out on few occasions because of it. There is a huge leak on garage floor, which makes garage very uncomfortable.

While most staffs are kind, some staff members, in particular, are extremely… unfriendly. When I asked a staff to address the issue of the downstairs neighbor playing the TV loudly all night, the staff only replied, "I will." But there was no change afterward. It was really killing me because the neighbor was playing the TV loudly every day that I cannot get asleep. When I asked multiple times for more than just a response of ‘I will’, I requested that they actually speak to the downstairs neighbor and ‘then’ let me know what steps had been taken. However, I only ever received the same response: "I will talk to the unit". I was never informed of what the staff said to the neighbor or how the neighbor responded. Honestly, if they had spoken to the unit after several requests, they could have told me how did it go, right?
After moving out, additional fees that were not in the contract were charged. When I sent them the contract file, pointing out that such fees were not in the contract, they claimed I had to pay based on an 'addendum' that I had never received. I don't understand why they only provided us with the main contract and not the addendum.
Additionally, I sold my car during my stay. I informed them in advance of the sale and asked for a refund of the parking fees after the car was sold. The staff said, "I can work on that," but after I moved out, the person asked if I had any evidence of that conversation or written proof, and refused to refund me. Staff is super. Building is clean and well maintained pool looks fantastic. Just a very nice place to live

I recently toured the property and less than three days later, I had signed my lease! This place is in a gorgeous area, and the complex is incredible!
