About Claridge's Apartments

Claridge’s, a stately pre-war building in the heart of midtown, is home to some of Manhattan’s most beautifully appointed luxury apartments. The classic pre-war residences of Claridge’s provide tenants with 9' high ceilings, restored plaster moldings... and beams, marble baths, entry foyers and many closets including huge walk-ins. Wausau thermopane windows for superior sound insulation. Many homes also offer separate service entrances, wood burning fireplaces with marble hearths and kitchens with granite. Penthouses feature large terraces, many offering views of Central Park. Claridge’s has an elegant lobby with lighting designed by renowned architect Paul Rudolph. The building provides its residents with full “white glove” services including a 24-hour doorman as well as a helpful concierge. Ideal for those desiring a walk-to-work midtown location, Claridge’s is only a few steps from Central Park, elegant Fifth Avenue and 57th Street shopping, the theater district, fine Midtown dining and museums including the MoMA .

Dark, Can't Open the Windows, Overwhelming Frying Smell from Restaurants

I was excited about the location but the apartment has issues. The windows only open a crack because they have a bolt in the sill that prevents them from opening. Not that I would want to open the windows, because if you do the smell from restaurants frying food is overpowering and permeates the rooms. With the windows closed there is no smell but then you are always reliant on the air conditioner which is an extra expense.
The apartment itself is cute but needs upgrades, which I knew going into...
the rental. I just wish I had thought to open the windows before I went into the rental agreement. It was winter and the windows being closed was something I never thought about.
The apartment faces the shaft so one room never has light, the bedroom has some slightly. It looks directly into the windows of the building right next to it so I keep the shades and blinds drawn at all times.
The heat is stifling in the winter even with the heat off (!). You have to decide if you want the smell of the restaurants if you open the windows, or sweat in the heat.
You get what you pay for, even though it is not cheap by any stretch of the imagination.
