The Vicinity

I really wanted to like living at The Vicinity because the apartment itself is cute, the location is convenient, and I’ve put a lot of effort into making the space feel like home. Unfortunately, the management and communication have been consistently frustrating.

One of the first issues was move-in billing. My lease began August 15, but I was charged the full August rent rather than a prorated amount for the half-month I actually had possession of the apartment. Paying a full month’s rent for… access to only half of that month was frustrating enough on its own, but the account information around move-in was also confusing. At one point my portal showed a strange remaining balance after a credit had been applied, while I had also been told verbally to pay the full amount. That left me trying to figure out whether I was about to overpay, while also dealing with processing fees just to make payments.

Since then, I’ve continued to deal with confusing account balances, charges that weren’t clearly explained, contradictory notices, and important information arriving late or not at all. I even received a past-due notice while I was actively trying to understand what I supposedly owed.

The most recent example was parking. I received an email saying parking is “leased separately this year” and that parking tags were ready, but I had never previously been given the terms, price, or any clear notice that I would need to pay separately to park where I live. I then found out it is $50 a month. That is not a small incidental fee, and it absolutely should have been communicated clearly before move-in so residents could factor it into the actual cost of living here.

What makes this especially frustrating is that residents receive a constant stream of emails about surveys, referral bonuses, events, promotions, and other nonessential things, while genuinely important information about billing, parking, and account requirements seems much harder to get.

I don’t expect perfection from an apartment complex. I do expect clear communication, transparent charges, accurate account information, and reasonable notice about costs. Too often, dealing with The Vicinity has felt unnecessarily confusing and disorganized, and I’m tired of having to chase down basic answers.

The apartment itself has positives, but based on my experience with management, I do not plan to renew when my lease is up. Read More
