D Street Village

On the very first day, when we got the keys, was a good indicator of how the next two years of our life would go. We received keys to two on site storage units that were full of other people's things. Perhaps current residents? No one seemed to know. Finally the third storage unit was empty, but dirty. They don't bother checking these out. Don't keep anything of value in a storage unit as D Street Village management seems to hand out keys like candy.

That takes me to our second incident. A… month after we moved in, the building was broken into and all of the keys and key fobs (to access the main doors to the building) were stolen. What D Street Village didn't do was deactivate the key fobs that were stolen, so the burglars had free access to the building for nearly seven months.

In that time there was a lot of break-ins and things stolen, including my bicycle and plenty of other bikes as well. I asked for the surveillance footage to be reviewed and sent to the police to aid the investigation. It took me asking seven times over a three week period for that to be done. The first six times I asked I got the run around and was told it was on their schedule. Lesson learned, you have to ask multiple times and eventually get firm with management to get anything done.

Our whole time at D Street Village there was plenty of break-ins. In addition to the bicycles, packages were stolen, cars were broken into, the keys at 3233 were stolen and people had things stolen out of their storage units. None of this was ever disclosed to the community. Management would deal with these incidents as individual cases. This was not only immoral, but was unsafe as well.

My girlfriend would usually walk the dog early in the morning and occasionally she would encounter a transient taking a shower in the outdoor dog wash. This happened multiple times. She would tell management, but true to form, nothing would be done. That is until I took matters into my own hands and took photos of the transient and sent them to D Street Village with the promise I would release them to the community if nothing was done. They did something about it. They put a closed sign on the dog wash and deactivated key fob access, but still left the water on and shower head in place. What this did was stopped residents from using the dog wash, but still allowed the transients, who climbed over the wall, to take a shower.
