Inspect Before You Rent - My Experience (April 2024)
I have documentation and receipts for everything mentioned below. I highly recommend thoroughly inspecting any unit if you decide to move in and speaking to current residents, if possible.
When I moved into my apartment in April 2024, the unit had been vacant for months and had not been properly prepared (it is still vacant now and listed on the site). There was no pest control treatment done before my move-in. The manager shared they chose... not to spray the interior prior to move in because "some tenants don't like commercial pest control." Only the exterior had been treated.
Due to large holes in the window frames, my unit quickly became infested with spiders, crickets, and other pests. 3 of the windows did not lock at all and had to be repaired. At one point, crickets were falling from the ceiling--onto my child's head. After speaking with other residents, I learned this was a widespread problem. One neighbor told me she woke up with a cricket stuck to her head. Many tenants, including myself, had to pay the monthly pest control fee to the complex and buy additional pest control products out of pocket. These issues persisted for over a year. The tub had no caulk and the baseboard was not secured.
Other major concerns:
* Trash service: Residents are charged for valet trash service, but it is inconsistently picked up. Trash bins often overflow, and there are times you can't even access the dumpster. I have photos documenting this.
* Safety: Within my first week, a vendor attempted to enter my apartment using a master key while my child was napping. I have video evidence of this.
* Maintenance: My child's bedroom door was broken when we moved in. I had to place a chair against it to keep it from locking my child in by accident until the next business day.
