Great Apartments (but some strange policies)
My wife and I lived here for about year and we loved it! The apartment was nice, management was incredibly friendly, and we were HUGE fans of the clubhouse’s movie room! When we initially signed a short-term lease, we weren’t sure of our upcoming plans which was the appeal of the 3-month lease. Part of that flexibility was reflected in a higher monthly rent. Upon finalizing our plans and liking the Fields, we wanted to lock in a longer lease but were told we’d be stuck at paying the premium rate... unless we upgraded to a larger unit (we were in a one bedroom/one bath). This was eventually what made us leave as we soon realized we could have larger spaces (3 bedroom/2 bath) in the same neighborhood for lower monthly rents than our one bedroom was costing us at the Fields. It seemed like a very one sided policy that slighted tenants in favor of the property owners. The other misleading experience we had was getting unexpectedly docked on our security deposit for professional cleaning fees. While we certainly lived in the space and made it our home over the year we lived there, my wife and I intentionally left a week of overlap with our new place’s move in date and our move out date at the Fields to deep clean the apartment. We patched and painted every hole, as well as deep cleaning every surface, cabinet, and shelf. During our brief move out inspection, the office employee said everything looked great and didn’t mark down anything on our move out sheet. When we received our deposit in the mail later, we had been docked 2 hours worth of professional cleaning (mind you - it was a small one bedroom/one bath apartment). While it was only $70 of cleaning fees, our issue was more in the misleading nature of the “refundable deposit” that doesn’t charge for touch ups or carpet cleaning. When I reached out to the office, I was told that professional cleaners are brought in on almost all of the move outs. I actually think that’s a great policy as the apartment was very clean when we moved in, but it should be stated clearly then that part of your deposit is non-refundable, and professional cleaners will do the deep cleaning upon move out. My wife and I spent several nights after work for a week deep cleaning an apartment that was going to have professional cleaners brought in anyways that we’d have to pay for. It was a waste of our time and unfortunately, a very bitter way to end an overall positive experience at our first apartment as a married couple.
