5/3/22

Great first solo apartment; not so great overall

I lived in Lakewood Manor for a year back in 2020-2021. It was the first apartment I lived in where I was completely on my own, and I loved it for that, but overall it wasn't great. To summarize:

Pros:
-rent is cheap and utilities are cheaper, despite being in Sugarhouse
-you pick your own internet plan, and there are several options in the area (but you'll probably pick Comcast)
-the fireplace is cozy
-within walking distance of Deseret Industries, Smith's, a board game store, and plenty of...
restaurants
-comes with an exterior storage closet AND covered parking AND a washer and dryer
-many cats in the neighborhood; all are friendly

Cons:
-you will have roommates, and they will be cockroaches
-front door isn't properly insulated, so air comes in through the bottom
-the coaxial cable is in the bedroom, so good luck connecting anything in the living room via ethernet
-has one of those terrible AC systems you find in hotel rooms
-fireplace is expensive to run for too long
-heater has clearly been subject to physical violence and, as an act of revenge against mankind, may have knowingly spewed more carbon monoxide than usual
-exterior storage closet could probably be broken open with my bare hands
-driving into the parking lot requires careful maneuvering so you don't ram into the stairs (which has clearly happened before, given how mangled they are)
-my car was broken into and stolen right out of the parking lot, there are no security cameras (I got it back, but that was a terrible, terrible day)

Overall 3/10 it's fine if your standards are at the very bottom of the barrel, but my standards were merely low. As such, I was thrilled to get out of there.
