GET EVERYTHING IN WRITING AND CONFIRM EVERYTHING 3 TIMES WITH 2 SETS OF PEOPLE. I was going to move into a 2bed apt at Walmor - the IRO property at University District Seattle. The building manager Kate told me it was going to be a monthly lease and I confirmed the same by repeatedly asking her (my fault being it was on the phone and not over email so I dont have written proof) given that I have a travel job I agreed to pay the deposit which was $600 for it since I could stop renewing the lease... if I ever had to relocate for my job. A few weeks after paying the complete deposit I was told by upper Management - Rachel, that it was a yearly lease and the deposit was non-refundable irrespective of my reasons for paying it. She was also the one who showed the apartment to me and on the spot changed terms from letting me have upto 3 more roommates, that I could only have 1 more roommate. Given the apartment was pricey for just 2, I had already spoken to others and finalized roommates and she told me I could only add 1 more person to the list without any justification whatsoever even though till a day before there could have been upto 4 people living in that apartment.
She was super arbitrary and really mean and needless to say refused to return my deposit. Kate ofcourse never replied to any of my emails. I had been out of Seattle for 3 months, hoping I could see this apartment and finalize it after I returned but eventually ended up living out of suitcases and crashing at my friends and inconveniencing a lot of people for weeks till I found another place.
