White walls, tan carpets, brass fixtures … sound familiar? Many rentals contain “builder basic” features that are easy to clean but may not reflect your personal style. So how do you add style without breaking the bank (or the rules of your lease?) Here are a few ideas to turn “basic blah” into “I love my home!”
Add a Gallery Wall
Is there any décor feature that reflects your personality more than a gallery wall? Whether it’s comprised of photos, thrifted art, framed fabric or a combination of all of the above, a gallery wall speaks volumes about your life and style. Keep it classic with orderly rows or switch it up by mixing frames and placement. Whatever you decide, when it’s time to move, the gallery comes with you and the holes can be easily patched with a teeny bit of spackle, sandpaper and paint.
Hang Mirrors
Mirrors have both form and function. Not only are they pretty, but they bring light into dark spaces and help you with that quick last look to ensure there’s no breakfast in your teeth before you go out the front door. Plus, there’s a mirror to fit every style: ornate, modern, geometric, metallic and more.
Replace a Light Fixture
Check the terms of your lease carefully, but some rentals allow you to switch out light fixtures as long as you put them back before you move. That means you can choose a fixture you love and take it with you when you leave. Worth the investment, don’t you think? I replaced our basic brass fixture with this $35 beauty from ReStore. It works great and adds much-needed style to this room.
Add a Temporary Backsplash
Does your kitchen need some spice? I’m not talking the paprika variety; I mean some spicy style! If your backsplash area could use some help, here are two easy ideas for a DIY temporary backsplash:
Hang frames. They’re easy to clean and can be switched out. I framed a recipe card from my mom and a map — they add style to my otherwise boring backsplash!
Hang an ornate metallic piece. This reproduction iron piece is heat-resistant and a perfect way to add interest to your kitchen. You can find one in antique stores or online. Get creative!

Create Additional Space With Baskets
Hanging baskets on your wall not only provides extra storage space but acts as unique wall décor too. Choose baskets you love and simply screw the back of the basket into the wall! Again, an added bonus is that when it’s time to move, just patch the holes and pack the baskets to repeat in your next space.
There’s nothing wrong with “builder basic,” but if you want to add style to your apartment, it can be done easily and on budget. Most of these five ideas can be purchased inexpensively; but if you want to splurge, you have my permission since they can all be taken with you if you move!
