3 Creative Ways to Use Your Balcony

3 Creative Ways to Use Your Balcony

Got a balcony? Lucky you! Summer is in the air, and when you can’t escape for a vacation, you can create one in your own home by taking advantage of this often overlooked space. Here are three creative (and inexpensive) ideas to take that extra space to another level. Now you’ll have your own place to relax, no passport required! 1. Create an Oasis A balcony doesn’t have to be big to be great. First, start with a blank space and add something to cover the floor. Outdoor rugs are relatively inexpensive, or you can add some astroturf (it’s making a comeback, I swear!). Put out chairs and a side table, which you can find in just about any big box retailer nowadays. Or get creative — use crates as chairs, topped with outdoor pillows. Then layer in accessories like pretty linens, lanterns and trays. These balcony ideas offer tons of inspiration! creative balcony seating area Greenery will breathe life into the space while also serving as a privacy screen. Plant easy-to-grow flowers and tuck them into every space that gets some light. Mixing up the types and heights of plants will create layers and interest. You can use planters, urns, hanging baskets or baskets that hang from a railing, depending upon your needs. And be sure to have a watering can handy! creative balcony flowers Last, light up the space with lanterns or hanging lights. This solar lantern came from Target and has weathered many a storm; the “candle” inside still flickers like new! Or create your own lighting with these creative DIY lighting ideas. 2. Grow an Herb Garden Who says you need a yard to grow fresh herbs in? Simply take them upwards and not outwards! If your landlord allows, attach a trellis to the outside wall. Use hanging pots (I found these at IKEA) to plant fresh herbs that will be steps from your kitchen when needed. creative balcony herbs This also makes a gorgeous display when you add trailing flowers and plants, such as these mini petunias. creative balcony trellis flowers 3. Make a Reading and Nap Nook Now that you have an oasis and garden, take advantage of all that privacy and add outdoor poufs! These makeshift nap spots will provide the perfect cushioning while you catch up on summer reading in the great outdoors. creative balcony ottoman Now you have a spot where you can escape the stress of the day and get fresh air without leaving home.
