3 Ways to Deal with Ugly Carpet In Your Rental

3 Ways to Deal with Ugly Carpet In Your Rental

Renting sometimes comes with a list of trade-offs, and one of the most frustrating is not being able to make permanent changes to your space. You can’t knock down walls, swap out cabinets, or rip up that ugly carpet you hate — no matter how much it drives you up a wall! Carpet is expensive and time-consuming to replace, so landlords tend to squeeze every last year out of it. That means you might find yourself moving into a unit with flooring that’s dingy, outdated, or just plain ugly. The worst part? There’s no clear timeline for when, or if,  it’ll be replaced. If the carpet situation in your rental has you cringing every time you walk through the door, you’re not alone. The good news is that there’s actually quite a bit you can do about it, even without your landlord’s permission. Here are three ways to make ugly rental carpet a lot more livable.

1. Distract Up

One of the best ways to deal with ugly carpet is to distract from it by making your walls (and even your ceiling!) something better to look at. 3 Ways to Deal With Ugly Carpet In Your Rental-03

Add Wall Decor or Treatments

Adding decorative elements like removable wallpaper, decals, statement art, upgraded light fixtures, and window treatments can all help draw the eye up and away from the floor. Just be careful not to overcrowd the space! Ig every surface is competing for attention, your eye will naturally drop to the floor for a visual break. The goal is a well-designed space filled with things you love, so the carpet barely registers.

Paint the Walls or Ceiling

Not every renter has the luxury of painting. But if you do, use this to your advantage. You can choose a color that better complements the carpeting to create a more cohesive overall aesthetic, or go bold with an attention-grabbing hue that keeps eyes moving upward and away from the floor. Don’t overlook the ceiling either! A painted ceiling adds a surprising amount of visual interest and is often one of the first things guests notice. Not allowed to paint? 2. Cover It Up

Sometimes, the best way to solve a problem is by covering it up. At least that’s a good alternative when you have an ugly carpet in your apartment! Change up the way your apartment looks with these layering tips.

Choose the Right Rug

Layered rugs are very much on trend, so look around your rental for logical places to add area rugs or runners. Placing rugs over the carpet not only reduces how much of the ugly flooring you see every day, but can add color, pattern, and personality to an otherwise bland space in a big way. Any rug you love will work, but flat woven styles are especially worth seeking out. They tend to sit flush against the carpet, which cuts down on tripping hazards and looks cleaner overall.

Shop Smart

Although the idea of covering up every inch of your ugly carpeting might be tempting, keep in mind that covering it completely is not only impractical (and silly looking!) but would also be quite expensive. Area rugs can be pricey, so try to find budget-friendly area rugs or runners for the rooms that need it the most and/or provide the most bang for their buck. Although any rug you love will work, try to find flat woven rugs. Not only are they a bit less expensive, but they will also sit the most flush against the carpet, reducing any tripping hazards.

3. Give It a Good Cleaning

Last but not least, try giving the carpet a good clean if it hasn’t been done in a while. Oftentimes, carpet color can look dingy and darker due to dust, dirt and regular wear-and-tear, especially in high-traffic areas. A carpet cleaning can lift out a lot of grime that may have settled deep in the carpet, and can leave your floors looking lighter, fresher, and all-together better. While cleaning cannot change the specific pile or color of your carpeting, it can improve something you are otherwise stuck with! Hire a Professional Cleaner

A professional cleaning can lift out a surprising amount of buildup and leave your floors looking noticeably lighter and fresher. When getting quotes, look for companies that offer hot water extraction (also called steam cleaning), which tends to give the deepest clean.

Try a DIY Carpet Cleaner

If a professional cleaning isn’t in the budget, don’t count yourself out. TikTok and Instagram ae full of solutions that are budget friendly! Rental carpet cleaning machines are available at most grocery and hardware stores and can get you surprisingly close results for a fraction of the cost. You’ll need to purchase the cleaning solution separately, but the total investment is usually well under $50. It takes a bit of elbow grease, but if your carpet has been looking dull for a while, the difference can be dramatic.

Still Struggling? Ask Your Landlord

If you’ve tried all of the above and the carpet is still driving you up the wall, it’s worth having a direct conversation with your landlord. Some landlords are open to replacing carpet ahead of schedule — especially if it’s visibly worn, stained, or old enough to be a liability. You might be surprised what’s possible just by asking! Ugly carpeting can be frustrating to deal with since it’s often present throughout much of a rental space. Although it’s everywhere, there are things you can do to help make it a bit more livable. Cover what you can, distract up when possible, and give it a good cleaning. If none of these things work, consider asking your landlord to swap it out ahead of schedule. Despite these tactics, however; you might find yourself in a situation where you just have to live with the ugly carpeting you have. In this case, “try your best, and forget the rest”…and the next time you’re looking for a new apartment, consider factoring the carpet color into your decision to sign!
