The Retreat at Walnut Creek

The Retreat at Walnut Creek ended up being the sweet spot for us after moving to KC from the west coast. North of the Retreat, prices were good, but the neighborhoods felt a bit rough. Downtown had nice buildings, but the sales pitch felt like buying a used car. This property struck the right balance of price, charm, and authenticity.

Our leasing experience was excellent. Pamela moved quickly and got us approved and moved in within three business days — even with a holiday weekend in the middle... . She communicated clearly through text and email and genuinely advocated for us throughout the process.

Abe, who maintains the property, showed real care. He addressed issues faster and better than expected, and it’s obvious he takes pride in keeping things running smoothly.

The property is older and shows some wear, which is why I’d rate it four stars instead of five. But look closely: many balconies have new beams, a good portion of the AC units have been replaced, green spaces are well maintained, and there’s an overall sense that the team is actively caring for an aging community rather than letting it slide. This place is an absolute failure when it comes to resident safety. There was a recent act of vandalism to my car in the parking lot involving extremely disturbing and outright life-threatening language. What’s worse is that management did absolutely nothing. No follow-up, no concern, no attempt to address the seriousness of the situation. This is supposed to be a gated community with parking permits, yet there are zero cameras in the parking lot—no monitoring, no accountability, nothing.

I... personally reached out to management and raised the very reasonable concern of installing security cameras. Their response? A flat-out refusal. They openly stated they have no plans to improve safety measures in any way. That level of negligence is beyond unacceptable—it’s reckless.

You’re essentially paying to live somewhere that pretends to be secure while ignoring real, documented threats. Management’s indifference sends a clear message: your safety is not their priority. Don’t choose The Retreat!!! I was there 5 years but didn’t respect the residents and poor customer service! Don’t lose your money and Don’t waste your time!!! Red flagged apartments complex!!!

I want to preface this review by saying that I have never been driven to write an apartment review in all my years of renting. I can put up with a lot but the horrible smells and terrible showers are two things that really get to you after awhile. Management is useless when it comes to fixes.

-Horrible smell throughout halls and in apartment. The smell is likely due to a mix of smoke and mold. I had to purchase an expensive HEPA filtered air system just to somewhat clean the air in the... apartment.
-I've seen multiple mold removal crews come in to different units.
-All nearby apartments have connected HVAC. So if a neighbor smokes, or goes to the bathroom, you can smell it like its happening in your own apartment.
-Smoking rules not enforced so everywhere smells like tobacco smoke and weed
-Apartment told us that it's our responsibility to limit neighbors smoking.
-Horrible water pressure in showers, shower water is a glorified drip
-The water pipes are old and rusted so the shower water caused skin irritation and acne.
-They installed drain blocks that don't allow any hair to go through shower (even small body hairs). This results in a clogged shower every 2-3 showers which you have to scrub out so the shower will drain again.
-Everything is old and breaking down.
-ceilings have weird mix of half regular paint and half popcorn ceiling
-staff is extremely unhelpful with all requests.

Yeah parkings not that great and the pet deposits aren’t the cheapest, but it’s a beautiful area, everyone has dogs, i didn’t have any issues with noise but I was on the third floor. Washer and dryer in the units are the best! Had a great experience with management and things get fixed in a timely manner. Overall probably the best spot in the area.
