The Worst Decision I’ve Ever Made — Do NOT Be Fooled by the Tour

I moved into this apartment on 6/27/25 after being told I’d be getting a unit that hadn’t been lived in since it was newly renovated. During the tour, everything looked fine — clean, modern, bug-free. But the moment I opened the door on move-in day, I realized I had made one of the biggest mistakes of my life.

Within one minute of entering the apartment, I found 2 dead bugs. I immediately left and called a professional pest control company for same-day service — paid for entirely out of pocket....
When they arrived, they confirmed what I feared: the apartment was infested with German cockroaches. To make matters worse, they also found a brown recluse spider — a venomous, dangerous spider that should never be inside a home, let alone one you’re just moving into.

I reported all of this to management. The assistant manager, Mika, is genuinely kind and tried to be helpful — but kindness is not enough when you’re dealing with an active infestation. She let me know their pest control service wouldn’t be available until the following Tuesday — almost a week later. Meanwhile, on just the second day (June 28), my husband entered the apartment and found more than 20 dead bugs. He documented everything. That was another confirmation that we made the right decision to stay in an Airbnb for the time being, another out of pocket expense.

Even after hiring our own professional exterminator, and the property sending theirs, the bugs kept coming. We spent hundreds of dollars more on boric acid, diatomaceous earth, foggers, vinegar, essential oils, outlet plugs— anything to get control of the infestation. Nothing has worked. The problem is still ongoing.

And it gets worse the “renovation” was clearly done carelessly. The apartment isn’t sealed properly so pests are free to come and go. There are unsealed cracks, bulging walls, rotting floorboards, and the toilet wasn’t even caulked to the floor. It’s all surface level upgrades with zero attention to structural quality or long-term livability.

Please take this seriously: the apartment might look great during the tour, but that’s just a cover up. Do not let appearances or a friendly face trick you into signing a lease that will make your life miserable. Mika may be kind, helpful, and an overall great manager who cares but that is not a good enough reason to ruin your peace of mind for the next year.

This has been the most stressful and expensive mistake I’ve ever made. I’m writing this in the hope that you don’t have to.
