True to its name, Canyon is named after Palo Duro Canyon State Park. Known as the Grand Canyon of Texas, Palo Duro Canyon State Park is the second largest canyon in the country. This sprawling 60-mile ravine with red stone cliffs provides residents with zip lines, an amphitheater, and trails for hiking, biking, and horseback riding. Along with its famed geological treasure, Canyon is known for being home to West Texas A&M University and the Panhandle-Plains Historical Museum, the state's largest and oldest history museum. Although the state park and other green spaces are frequented by locals, Canyon also hosts family-friendly events throughout the year, including outdoor movies, free concerts, and flea markets.
