My 1st Rental in America

As a newcomer to the US you experience many things for a first time. My first impressions of the Northern suburbs of Boston were like I am in a nice and quiet mountain village. What I thought to myself was “Probably the people who live here feel like they’re on vacation all the time”. Yes, it was that much different from the place I used to live so far in the capital city of a small Eastern European country. Right after the dizziness of the first days emotions we stumbled across the reality that... we are not here as tourists and there are so many things to do the next couple of weeks. The first and most important was to find a place to live. Fortunately we managed to do that the first week and now we are already in our first apartment.
Moving to the US is a huge step. There are a few essential tips for every new immigrant finding a rental and making his first steps in America.

? Make sure that wherever you intent to settle – state, city or area – there will be relatives, friends or just people who can help you at the beginning somewhere nearby.
? Research the rental prices in advance and be prepared to come with enough money to cover your rent for the first 2-3 months. Don’t forget the security deposit as well.
? Having no credit history in the country you will most probably need to find a co-signer for your first apartment to guarantee for you. See tip #1
? The cost for rent is usually the biggest expense you will have here, so make sure to make a budget wise choice. You’ll need to save your money for other thing as well, before you start earning.
? Some of the rentals include utility bills in the rental price – heating, water, A/C, etc. That is a HUGE advantage, especially if you go to a state where the weather is too hot or cold in the season and that could save you a lot of money after.
? Most of the rentals here are not furnished but they all have finished and equipped kitchens. You don’t have to spend much on new furniture – just browse the sites for used or free items in your area. There are also yard sales almost every weekend. With more imaginary you can quickly turn your rental to a nice, cozy and eclectic home.

Welcome to America and let your new life begin!
