Happy I don’t live here anymore

I was living there 3+ years. Always paid in advance for everything, was following community rules, didn’t cause any trouble.
However:
1. Managers and workers were so nice at first, but after you signed the lease, they don’t care. They won’t help you with anything.
When I moved from townhouse to apartment, they took all my townhouse downpayment and downpayment for my cat plus said I owe something from cleaning! Then they charged me two new down-payments. They periodically overcharged me, and...
when I kept calling, they never had any explanation and were annoyed with me. Plus no one picks up the phone or call you back. Emails I got from them are very passive aggressive and rude. Sometimes they just ignored me.
So, the moment I entered my new apartment building, cigarette smoke hit me. People were smoking inside, in the basement (were smoking weed), they smoked weed in the gym as well. I couldn’t breathe and I had my kids living with me. Management was annoyed with my complaints and said, if I wanted, to move out. They were asking ridiculous questions to show me being unreasonable about my complaints. A manager even told me that he had come to our building, and had sat on the stairs, and had never seen nobody smoking there! Can you believe that?!
So, I couldn’t move out at a time because they took all my money. Then they said with a new lease renewal, people were not allowed to smoke inside. Were they before?! People kept smoking inside; my living room and other rooms were filled with a cigarette smoke. It means fire alarms were not working. Then fires started happening: one in our building, and some in other buildings as well. I addressed that but our leasing office or Beacon Management were so annoyed with me again.
Then I had an opportunity to move out and told them that I was moving out and paid for current month and my utilities. I let them know, disconnected all my services, and moved out. They, without telling me anything, sent a crazy bill I had no idea about! How can you treat people like that? They see you as money and more money, they don’t treat you as a person or family because they don’t care!
2. Maintenance is horrible! Everything is old and broken! Maintenance workers treat you with sarcasm and neglect like you are the one who should know how to fix a leaking shower or a broken garbage disposal. They came back to fix the same issue 3-4 times annoyed and irritated.

Do Yourself a Favor and Look Elsewhere

Living at Charter Square Apartments has been one of the most frustrating experiences I’ve had. From the start, the roach problem was unbearable. No one wants to come home to bugs crawling across the floor, and it took way too long for anything to be done about it.

The hallways constantly smell awful — a mix of mildew, gross food, and who knows what else. It’s genuinely unpleasant just getting to your door. And while the plumbing issues were eventually fixed, they were a hassle to deal with and...
should’ve been addressed much sooner.

As for the neighbors — loud, obnoxious, and totally inconsiderate. Quiet hours might as well not exist here. If you value peace and quiet, you won’t find it in this building.

Honestly, the only thing Charter Square has going for it is the location, but even that isn’t worth dealing with all the issues. There are plenty of other places where you won’t have to share your apartment with roaches or listen to shouting matches through the wall and even waste 1500 dollars on 2 bed that was their definition of “updated.”

Would not recommend

Lived in a two bedroom unit at charter square for a year. Would not recommend anyone live here. Paid for “upgraded amenities” in our apartment which was supposed to include new flooring and upgraded kitchen cabinets. Kitchen cabinets are not upgraded just the old cabinets painted white. The upgraded flooring in both the bathroom and the kitchen is a sticker on top of the old flooring. You can see the edge of the sticker and peel it back to reveal the old flooring underneath. Underneath the sink... was completely warped from years of water damage and also covered in mold. The stove turns on and off when cooking and when complained about to maintenance nothing was done. The electrical outlets are very old almost all of our plugs fell out of the wall when we would attempt to plug them in. Maintenance team also claimed nothing could be done about that. In terms of safety there are no cameras anywhere and the complex is right next to I-75 giving people an easy getaway. The person I lived with did get their car broken into as well as a lot of the other residents. The back door to enter into the building hallway didn’t lock properly either. Which our neighbor told us that it has been like that for years with nothing being done by the office to fix it. The maintenance team entered in while we were not home without notice or warning. We only knew they had been there because of the report they left behind. The paper had the wrong information with another residents personal information (name, phone number, email, whether they have a pet, and if they had an alarm). When I confronted them about this incident the office tried to laugh it off as a small mistake saying at least I had a new shower head even though I had never requested one in the first place. I made it clear that we weren’t trying to cause any trouble or conflict but them entering in is a huge invasion of our privacy and a legal issue. Not to mention the poor person who submitted that request never received a fixed shower head and got all their personal information given to a complete stranger without consent. The carpet is fairly old but not the worst. And the apartments do offer quite a bit of storage. They are also quite spacious but awkwardly shaped. Overall the apartments are overpriced for what you’re getting, none of the amenities are covered, and if we would’ve stayed our rent would be even higher than when we moved in. Not much to offer unless you need a lot of space and to live in the troy area.

Such a Great Location

We just moved in and after the first month I have to say..... I’m enjoying my new place. We have a 3 bedroom townhouse. The rooms are a bit small for a queen size bed and furniture and the dishwasher is tiny. But everything else is a plus. Maintenance is very responsive, stores are conveniently located. The office staff is very helpful. And the area I’m in is very quiet. I would definitely recommend this place for a small family. If there were improvements I would suggest it would be to update... the screen doors and also finish every basement without charge. :-)

Charter Square: Seasoned Staff full of Professionals Review by Feana Humphrey

The Leasing Professionals at Charter Square are seasoned and knowledgeable in all subject matters. They might not realize it, but they are offering a unique complimentary concierge service. They gave me advice on how to do Black Friday shopping on a budget and how to make my unit Amazon Alexa friendly. I was amazed that all of this was at no additional cost. Post my amazing hands on tour (they explained how to use every appliance in my unit) and loaded me down with wonderful gifts at my... lease signing.

To my dismay, I accidentally forgot to close my dishwasher and frantically searched my smoke detectors to see which one was going off. The dishwasher being left open without turning it off reminded me of how a smoke detector sounds when it goes off. This was my issue not theirs. I later told Chante Edwards what happened. She laughed with me and not at me.

If you are a true yuppie or a down to earth prep who remembers the original Dynasty, you will like this place. If you prefer everything walkable, you will be able to walk and ride your bikes in a safe environment. If you like to spend time with your loved ones, you will enjoy renting out the Community Center.

I know what to expect and asked the right questions. If my rent raises by $20 at the end of my lease, I will not be surprised (especially if there is an upturn in the economy). I was even told to give 60 days notice verses the 30 days notice other properties require. I am glad I asked Chante about this.

As I stated, the staff is knowledgeable, ask them questions.

Hopefully, you make this place into a great home for you and your loved ones.
