Not safe
I have been a resident at Stonehills Apartment Complex since May 2024, and my recent experiences have been extremely disappointing. On October 13th at 11:35pm, my car was stolen from the supposedly secure parking garage. When I discovered this the next morning, I immediately contacted the West Orange Police Department and the front desk. I was told that a police officer could only come to my apartment with authorization from the building manager. After filing a police report, I requested a call... from the manager, as my car was parked directly under a surveillance camera. The building manager, Jennifer, confirmed she could see the footage but refused to share it with me or the police, citing privacy policies and requiring a subpoena for access.
I also learned that the garage exit door had been broken and left open indefinitely, which allowed the thieves to enter easily. Jennifer even remarked, "Well, it looks like you had a target on yourself," and told me not to take it personally when I questioned her comment.
What has been even more concerning is the lack of follow-up from management. Over a week has passed, and no one from management has reached out to offer assistance or even check on us. No email was sent to residents about the incident until 13 hours later. Ironically, management is quick to send emails about minor issues like a roaming cat or children in the hallways, but not about a car theft in a "secure" garage.
To add insult to injury, today I received a cease and desist letter for allegedly violating the leasing agreement by having more than three guests and bringing my dog to a reserved amenities area—despite this being a dog-friendly facility and my guests being in a closed simulation room. I have rarely used the amenities, and there was never an issue before. It feels like management is more focused on penalizing residents than ensuring our safety or well-being.
I am extremely disappointed by the lack of security, transparency, and empathy from the management at Stonehills. Residents deserve better communication and support, especially in serious situations like this.
