The Roe represents the collective effort of an extraordinary group of architects, engineers, designers, skilled craftspeople, and construction professionals. Together, we shared a vision that these historic buildings deserved more than restoration—they deserved to be reimagined as a community that could serve as a model for the thoughtful adaptive reuse of historic properties. From the earliest planning sessions, we challenged ourselves to think differently. We considered not only square footage, but volume and openness; not just rooms, but how people would move through them and experience them every day. The project required several years of planning, followed... by nearly two years of construction. From the very beginning, we were fortunate to assemble an extraordinary team of architects, engineers, skilled craftsmen and craftswomen, and construction professionals. Early in the process, everyone recognized both the opportunity and the responsibility before us. We were not simply renovating historic buildings—we were entrusted with preserving an important part of Manayunk's history while creating a community designed for the future. Our vision was to demonstrate how the adaptive reuse of historic buildings could successfully combine environmental sustainability, energy efficiency, thoughtful planning, exceptional craftsmanship, and modern living without compromising the character and heritage that make these buildings so special. Above all, we wanted to create a community that would genuinely enhance our residents' quality of life. We were certainly blessed with an exceptional location and remarkable buildings, but buildings alone do not create a great community. It is the people who bring it to life. I recently had the opportunity to spend time at The Roe after being away for several months while planning the next phase of the community. What impressed me most was not just how beautifully the buildings and grounds have been maintained, but the genuine relationships our staff has developed with our residents. It was created to make a statement: that our historic buildings should be preserved and thoughtfully repositioned, not demolished. Countless ideas and innovations were discussed and ultimately built into what The Roe is today. Many of these features are subtle and not immediately visible, yet they contribute greatly to the sense of comfort and well-being you so eloquently described.
