They Will Keep Your Security Deposit
I know I’m going to sound like a disgruntled ex-tenant but this is still something others should be made aware of. I’m extremely disappointed with my experience after move-out. I was a quiet, responsible tenant with no pets, no kids, no issues whatsoever, and kept the apartment in good condition, yet management withheld my entire security deposit and added additional charges for painting, carpet cleaning, and “turnover” fees that appear to be standard wear and tear. I don’t even let people walk... in my apartment with shoes on! Not only that, but charging for paint is ironic when the bathtub I received upon move in was painted over to make it look nicer (only for the paint to chip with water use, AKA daily showers/baths). Why they painted over the bathtub floor I have no idea, but it was annoying having it constantly chip with maintenance stating it was somehow my fault.
I have formally requested documentation, invoices, photos, and inspection records to justify these move-out charges. Tenants should be aware that routine turnover costs may be passed on to them after move-out. Don’t plan to get your security deposit back. I worry for families with little ones, especially if this is how a single-occupancy tenant is treated. (A clean freak at that!)
The apartment itself was fine during my stay (safe, quiet, quick maintenance service), but the handling of the security deposit process left a very negative impression. I’m active-duty military so it’s out of my control when I get placed on assignment to move somewhere new which caused me to terminate my lease early due to coming down on assignment orders. Honestly, this is just a headache because I now have to involve military legal to assist with these charges.
