Lots of fees, lousy service
My main complaints about this apartment complex are:
- maintenance constantly fail to perform repairs successfully
- management seems more concerned with charging extra fees than with providing good service
When I first moved it, I provided management a list of repairs my apartment needed. The maintenance staff sent to perform repairs did everything badly. EVERYTHING he "fixed" broke again within a day. It was a portent of things to come. Several months later, a streetlamp in the parking lot... tipped over. It went unattended for over a month before they bothered to repair it. Again, a sign of how things are run here.
Last summer, during the hottest heatwave NC has experienced in years, my HVAC stopped working. Management sent over maintenance staffers, who fiddled ineffectually with the HVAC unit for 3 days. FINALLY they called a professional service, who immediately diagnosed the problem as a bad compressor. The maintenance crew was so incompetent they couldn't even figure out this common problem. In the end I had to wait 8 days to get the repair completed (because the needed part was not immediately available). Management never apologized for this huge inconvenience and discomfort, nor did they offer any discount for my enduring a sweltering apartment for 8 days.
When I moved out, they charged me $330 for damage to the carpet which they claim was caused by my dog. They billed me for this without any evidence or explanation, apparently thinking I'd just pay it. I still haven't seen evidence that the problem was caused by my dog, who is well housebroken and could not have caused the damage they claim he caused. The carpet was four years old and I'd only been in the apartment for one year; it could have been caused by previous tenants for all I know.
I should have figured they'd find another way to hit me with an extra charge. Camden finds ways to charge you for EVERYTHING. You have to pay for Internet and cable regardless of whether you want it ($90/month); valet garbage regardless of whether you use it ($30/month); they even charge you a $15 fee for processing your rent payment. You PAY to PAY your rent. It should be illegal, but somehow it isn't. They also charge you a nonrefundable $325 pet fee when you move in plus $15 a month in additional pet fees. None of that, apparently, was enough to cover the damage they claim my pet caused, but didn't.
I would NOT recommend this place at all.

Apartment
The property is convenient to Chapel Hill and Durham. There are also a few restaurants, services, and retail shops in the vicinity. Governors Village has plenty of nice walking areas. The price for the apartment is not bad in comparison to others around the area. This apartment complex is outside the city limits. The neighborhood is very safe and you can walkabout just about anytime, but occasionally, a few packages did come up missing for residents. The office does not sign for packages. While... the overall appearance of the property is nice, there is quite a bit of noise. The building materials allow for noise to permeate on all sides. Even if you are upstairs, you still hear quite a bit of noise from the downstairs neighbors. In addition, you may hear people going up and down the stairs at all hours. The outside walls do little to shield against noise as well. The valet trash service comes later in the evening. If you live near the dumpster area, be prepared to hear them cut up and make noise with their vehicles. The layout of the property and the apartments are nice. Two good features are that the apartments include a washer and dryer, and they have spacious balconies. Unfortunately, the one I rented was a little in disrepair. Several service requests were submitted to have items fixed. Some items needed to be repaired more than once, including the garbage disposal and the AC unit. Upon leaving, the AC unit still rattled and froze up occasionally. Cable and Internet service are included in the rent. That includes a digital adapter box (not a DVR box), and the channel lineup includes HBO. The Internet speeds were good. The price for the services isn't bad. Water, sewer, trash, and pest control are paid at the same time as rent, but be prepared to pay a higher bill for those. There is a monthly fee, approximately $12, just for having service. Also, you pay it in arrears, you get the bill for those services over a month later, and the paper bill comes two or three days before it's due. My rent was not high during my tenure, but based on the company's pricing model, the rent for available units changes several times a month based on availability. When it is time to renew your lease, beware that you could end up with something much higher than what you were paying. Overall, it's not a terrible, but there are a few kinks.

Simple Living in a Beautiful Neighborhood
Camden Governors Village is a beautiful community. We live in the smallest apartment they offer and are right by the garages. Surprisingly it's not as loud as you would think. The one drawback is we do get occasional bugs who venture from the garages to our place, HOWEVER Camden offers pest control each Tuesday, so it's not a huge problem. They fired our old maintenance guy who fixed our requests within 48 hours. Now it takes a week to get a maintenance guy here, so if they could hire more help... that'd be great. All the rooms are carpeted except for the entryway, kitchen, and bathroom which is great. For living in the one bedroom, the storage space is decent and the living area is so open! This makes it feel a little bigger than it is. The huge windows help too. The complex has a nice pool, cardio room, weight room, and sufficient parking. Evening walks here are the best. This complex DOES allow pets for a one time $200 fee which you never have to pay again as long as you live here. Walking the dog to the park across the street is enjoyable. The complex is well landscaped. The apartments are a little pricier than others in the area, but it's worth it because of the great and safe neighborhood. Governors Village is kind of a rich neighborhood, so you don't see many shady characters. Across the street there is a grocery store, ABC store, Fantastic Sams, a pharmacy, an Italian restaurant, coffee shop, Chinese take out, and a PNC bank. You could walk to all these places, and the restaurants are great. All in all, I'm very happy here. My one complaint is just the maintenance issue I mentioned. As a side note, Jeff Goldblum, please visit me:)
